So, the time has come for me to make Easy Monitor a little prettier before I make it ‘public’. My main focus is front end development so I’m well aware of the way things are going these days. More and more people are opting for their iPads, Huddles or their smartphones when using the internet. Until a few years ago we could be a little complacent about optimising our sites for portable devices. Only the minority would be using our sites on a portable device. The tables are slowly turning!
Anyway, with this in mind I knew I had to make Easy Monitor mobile and tablet friendly. At the same time, I want to spend my time working on the software side at the other end, what use is a pretty site when it doesn’t work? I decided to rebuild the site using bootstrap.
To be completely honest it was a little strange at first. I didn’t realise quite how much bootstrap does for you. Bit by bit I found myself removing styles I had added in the old theme and letting bootstrap take over.
All in all, it took me about 4 hours to rebuild the whole site using bootstrap, the main stylesheet for the site is around 300 lines now! Anyone who’s done front end development will know that’s a pretty small number for a whole site. Another great thing about it is that I can very easily change the look of the site, build a new bootstrap stylesheet with some slightly modified dimensions and colours and bingo, new site!
Now this is done I’m much happier about making the site public. Also, I can start to focus on the back end of the site a bit. The big thing for this site is going to be user control.
Anyway, here’s the important bit, check it out: http://monitoring.greynet.co.uk
